Will you help us keep our St. Mary Cemetery beautiful for generations to come?
To walk the grounds of St. Mary Cemetery is, perhaps, one of the best ways to grasp what it means when we say St. Mary Parish has a 165-year legacy of faith & love. Among the pines and cedars, many of them as old as or older than the cemetery itself, is a record of life and death; a time continuum that brings together the lives of thousands of individuals and collectively transforms them into history, our St. Mary story. It is a record of those who mortgaged farms and businesses to establish the first Catholic parish in Appleton just a decade after Wisconsin became a state. They included immigrants and pioneers who came to this river valley to build lives, families, churches, and communities. It continues with loved ones for whom the tears are still wet, lives whose complete fullness has yet to be understood.
Aware of a growing list of major current needs, one of these benefactors has offered a $15,000 MATCHING GRANT to help the parish maintain our beautiful cemetery grounds. Items/projects on the list include:
- Bridge repair/replacement – integrity of the stone bridge, which dates back to 1927, is being evaluated to determine the extent of needed repairs
- Redesigned Veterans Memorial – current size impedes traffic and snow removal; aging timber borders need replacing
- New tractor – capabilities of our current tractor are not adequate to meet operating needs of the cemetery
- Repaving roads – roads in oldest section have not been addressed since the middle of the last century
- Straightening of monuments
- Smoothing, replanting & reseeding of grass surfaces; resetting of flush markers
