Aug 14: Day by Day with Father Bill

Memorial of Saint Maximilian Kolbe, Priest and Martyr

Father Kolbe was martyred at Auschwitz on August 14, 1941.  After a prisoner escaped from the concentration camp, the Nazis lined up ten prisoners who would pay the penalty for the escape with their own lives.  Father Kolbe asked to take the place of a prisoner who was a husband and father.  As the nine were starved to death, Father prayed with them, consoled them, and, when he was left all alone, the Nazis finally poisoned him.  In July of 2016, Pope Francis prayed in silence in Father Kolbe’s cell.  In the guestbook of the museum at Auschwitz, Pope Francis wrote, “Lord, have mercy on your people! Lord, forgive such cruelty!”
